Nkandla – The forgotten village of Mandaba in Nkandla in the north of KZN had an opportunity to shine on social media. A son of its soil, the award-winning maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose, known as Indlamlenze, flew the flag of his village at the 67th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, USA on Sunday. Social media was abuzz with maskandi fans and especially those who support Khuzani, collectively known as the Blue Nation. Khuzani was invited through Lebo M of Lion King-fame. He says his attendance at the Grammys was a sign that the maskandi genre is being recognised worldwide.
Sobantu – Poor kids of Sobantu village in Pietermaritzburg received school uniforms from the Truman Magubane Foundation, named after the ANC struggle stalwart. More than 50 learners from Sobantu Comprehensive High received new uniforms and branded tracksuits from the foundation. ANC KZN chairperson Siboniso Duma attended the ceremony on Tuesday and said they want the school to produce a new crop of leaders. “We want to make sure that no learner feels inferior because they come from poor families,” he said.
Durban – The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned fighting at a school in Durban which landed some of the learners in hospital. Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi didn’t reveal the name of the school but said that they received complaints two days ago about the fight and they are treating the matter with urgency. Mahlambi said they have deployed officials to the school to deal with the matter.
