Durban: Struggle stalwart and former President Jacob Zuma’s spokesperson Mac Maharaj has slammed those who claim that the Constitution of this country ignored economic transformation when it was drafted. Maharaj was speaking at the launch of Billy Nair’s digitalised archive at the Durban University of Technology recently. Maharaj said that the criticism is misleading. “It is incorrect to allege that the Bill of Rights ignored issues relating to the economy. The Constitutional Assembly was mindful that the principle of equality must permeate both social and economic rights. Issues of housing, health, food and water, social security, children’s basic needs, education, environment protection and certain land reform rights feature explicitly in the Bill of Rights,” said Maharaj. He said that the concerns with regard to the extent and pace of achieving social and economic transformation are misplaced when they are attributed to shortcomings in the Constitution. “We should never be afraid to look at ourselves in the mirror. However, let us make sure it is not a distorting mirror that alters the appearance of whatever is reflected in it,” said Maharaj. His concerns come as parties like the uMkhonto weSizwe Party call for the review of the Constitution especially on economic transformation and land redistribution.
Estcourt: The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the sentence of life and an additional 23 years in prison handed down to Vusimuzi Victor Makhaye by the Estcourt Regional Court. This follows his conviction on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder and defeating the administration of justice. The offences arise from the September 2023 murder of his partner, Nosipho Constance Madondo, 40. Makhaye and Madondo, who were in a domestic relationship, lived in Mooi River and Estcourt respectively. Before the incident, Makhaye devised a plan to kill Madondo and rob her of her belongings. He lured her to Mooi River under the pretence that he had arranged diesel for her vehicle. Makhaye was sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery with aggravating circumstances, life imprisonment for murder and eight years for defeating the administration of justice. The court ordered that the sentences for robbery with aggravating circumstances and defeating the administration of justice run at the same time. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Ladysmith: KZN Premier Thami Ntuli described the co-founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo as a man who was down to earth. Ntuli was speaking at the funeral of Mudletsheni Albert Mazibuko in Ntabamhlophe, KZN Midlands, on Saturday. Ntuli hailed Mazibuko as South Africa’s music ambassador who spread peace, love and harmony in the world. The Premier added that despite being famous, Mazibuko remained down to earth until his last day on earth. “Mazibuko’s compassion and love for people knew no bounds. He was a humble man who served Ladysmith Black Mambazo with honesty, dedication and diligence,” concluded Premier Ntuli.
