KZN news bites: IFP threatens to bar leaders who campaign on social media ahead of conference

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

uThukela: The IFP has threatened to disqualify leaders from contesting any positions if they fail to stop their social media campaigns ahead of the party’s elective conference.

The party issued the directive this week following a fierce online battle among local leaders in uThukela district, who are contesting positions at district, constituency and branch level. The IFP warned that any leader who allows their name to be used in a social media campaign will face internal processes and be disqualified from contesting.

IFP structures are heading into highly contested elective district conferences this weekend as part of the buildup to the national elective conference, which has been postponed several times. Sources in uThukela told Scrolla.Africa that the organisation fears such campaigns could divide the party ahead of the local government elections and drive members to vote for other political parties.

Richards Bay: The business sector has raised concerns about the planned 30 June protest against illegal immigrants, fearing it could harm businesses as the July 2021 riots did.

The concerns were raised during a meeting between the Zululand Business Chamber of Commerce and SAPS in Richards Bay on Friday. Police Major General Anthony Gopaul advised that any business employing illegal foreign nationals should close on that day and urged business leaders to establish direct lines of communication with police for swift reaction when needed.

“If your business is employing undocumented foreign nationals, shut down that business because you are breaking the law. We will not sit around the table and discuss securing businesses of people who are breaking the law,” said Gopaul.

Durban: The DA leadership in KwaZulu-Natal has weighed in on the planned march against illegal immigrants, urging communities to remain calm and reject violence, vigilantism and xenophobia while acknowledging the genuine frustrations many South Africans feel about unemployment, crime and pressure on public services.

The party says sustainable solutions require restoring law and order, strengthening border management and ensuring immigration laws are enforced fairly and consistently. The DA is expected to meet members of the media in Durban on Monday to discuss the matter further.
