Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Pietermaritzburg: The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is set to hand over 36 vehicles as tools of trade to 36 traditional leaders in the province. These vehicles are a top-up to the 30 top-of-the-range 4×4 bakkies, valued at R19 million, that were given to traditional leaders at the opening of the House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders in Ulundi last month. MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi told the Cogta Portfolio Committee that the next batch of these 36 vehicles will be handed over next month in June. He also extended an invitation to members of the Cogta Portfolio Committee to attend the June handover of the vehicles to Amakhosi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the institution of traditional leadership.

Cornubia: More than 4,000 families who were victims of floods were accommodated at new units built in Cornubia, north of Durban, on Monday. Following ravaging floods over the past three years, all three spheres of government have been working together to build permanent houses for the flood victims. In particular, with eThekwini being the worst-affected municipality, authorities have accommodated more than 4,000 families since 2022 in rented flats known as Transitional Emergency Accommodation (TEAs). This follows the closure of all community halls that previously accommodated flood victims.

Umfolozi: The KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has met with religious leaders across the province to discuss issues pertaining to social cohesion and moral regeneration. The Premier’s Breakfast with Religious Leaders was held at the Umfolozi Casino Hotel on Tuesday. Apart from nourishing the body, the breakfast went a long way in feeding the soul and psyche of the province by fostering positive discussions around the scourges that afflict KwaZulu-Natal and ways to overcome them.
