June salaries for ANC caucus in KZN legislature unpaid

By Sihle Mavuso

Staff working in the caucus office of the ANC in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in Pietermaritzburg are frustrated after going unpaid for the month of June.

The staff is even more frustrated that there is no end in sight to the problem as the ANC has allegedly delayed in appointing an accounting officer to manage caucus funds from the legislature.

The non-payment of June salaries has been spoken about in hushed tones in corridors of the legislature. It was later confirmed when Zenzele Msomi, the ANC caucus manager, sent a memo to the staff about the matter.

Msomi, who was once the regional secretary of the ANC in the Harry Gwala region, said everything now lies with the provincial office.

“Good morning Caucus Staff, it is with regret to inform you that, your salaries have not yet been processed due to non-payment by Legislature as they’re still waiting for our movement to give them a signed form of our Accounting Officer for the 7th Administration,” Msomi wrote in the memo that was later leaked.

Despite the memo from Msomi, the spokesperson of the ANC in the province, Mafika Mndebele, claimed that all is in order.

“All our office staff was paid, caucus staff is being paid as we speak,” Mndebele claimed when asked about the matter by Scrolla.Africa

His claim was later shot down by some staff members as false and misleading. The staff members said they had not received their June salaries by 5pm on 2 July.

“It’s a lie, we have not been paid yet,” one staff member said when denying Mndebele’s claim.

It is believed that in the last administration, the ANC Caucus which had 44 MPLs in the legislature was allocated R40-million for a year.
