‘It’s like a miracle!’

Amid the devastation of fires that have ravaged Hawaii’s Maui Island, a beautiful sight has emerged — the Maria Lanakila Catholic Church stands untouched.

The fire, which has claimed the lives of at least 93 people and left a trail of destruction, has shown no mercy with homes and businesses being reduced to ruins.

Yet this historic church, which dates back to 1846, remains a symbol of hope.

Monsignor Terrence Watanabe shared the feelings that echoed through the community.

“For us, it’s like a miracle,” he said.

The Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Victory, was founded by Rev. Aubert Bouillon of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

While the fire has left its mark on the church, the core structure remains.

Monsignor Watanabe acknowledged the need for an assessment of damages, particularly to the roof, butsaid that the spirit of the church and its congregation remains strong.

A nearby Catholic school, Sacred Heart Schools, suffered the brunt of the winds after the fire, suffering major damage.
