The family of a woman who was allegedly bludgeoned to death by her husband say that he haunts them daily with death threats and admissions of murder.
This follows the senseless and brutal killing of Zibuyile Ngubeni, who was allegedly beaten by her husband with a hammer last Tuesday — allegedly for posing for a photo without a hat.
Ngubeni was murdered the day before her 26th birthday in their home in Mhlathizi village, Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal.
Her body was discovered by her neighbours with several wounds on her head. Her widow had already fled the scene.
Ngubeni’s brother, Siyanda Ngubeni, 21, said the family was looking forward to celebrating with her. Instead, on the morning of her birthday, they received the news that her husband had killed her.
The family say they were informed of her passing by one of her neighbours after the husband allegedly called to inform them of her death. The husband then allegedly asked the neighbours to inform her family.
Siyanda said his brother-in-law had bashed his sister with a hammer in the presence of their four-year-old son.
“When we got to the house, we found that the child had drops of his mother’s blood on his head,” Siyanda told Scrolla.Africa.
He said since the incident his brother-in-law had been calling and told them that he killed Zibuyile because he received pictures of her posing while not wearing the hat she had left home in while meeting her cousin at a hotel in town.
“Zibuyile discovered a distant cousin while visiting the hospital a few days ago. The cousin invited her out to lunch at a hotel in town,” said Ngubeni.
Ngubeni says Zibuyile took pictures with one of her female friends. In some of the pictures, Zibuyile removed her hat. Ngubeni says her husband says this angered him and led him to kill her.
“He is now calling and threatening to do the same to our cousin. He says he wants us to tell him where she stays so that he can go and punish her for taking his wife out to a hotel.
“It is really insane. We are living in fear that he might strike again, especially since we do not know where he is. He keeps telling us that he is around,” said Ngubeni.
The family says the accused has been calling since Sunday afternoon after Zibuyile’s funeral. His last call was on Monday evening.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza has called on law enforcement agencies to work around the clock to find the “heartless killer, who is still at large”.
KZN police spokesperson, Lt Col Nqobile Gwala, confirmed that the police were still searching for the suspect who allegedly fled the scene after the incident.
