- Sweet Guluva says he’s not part of the Amabhinca — he just grew up around people who dressed that way.
- He will perform with Somizi at the Durban Music Festival despite Somizi’s earlier comments about not promoting him.
Big Brother uMlilo Season 5 winner Sweet Guluva says people have got it all wrong — he’s not part of the Amabhinca, he just likes their fashion.
The reality TV star, whose real name is Akhonamathemba Mbhele, is often spotted rocking Omega sandals, Brentwood pants, a uMqhele headband or even a towel over his shoulder — items strongly linked to the Bhinca Nation.
But Guluva says people are making assumptions based on what he wears.
“I can’t say I’m a Bhinca. I’m a person who likes fashion. I grew up in a place where people wear these clothes,” he told Scrolla.Africa with a smile.
He said his style was inspired by his upbringing and his father, Mlungisi “Waya Double Seven” Mbhele, who was a kwaito star and a presenter at Vibe FM.
The soft-spoken entertainer has made waves since winning Big Brother uMlilo, and he isn’t slowing down. He confirmed he’ll be sharing the stage with Somizi Mhlongo at the Durban Music Festival on 3 May.
The concert, headlined by Rick Ross, is expected to pull a big crowd.
Somizi stirred drama online after he asked fans not to promote Guluva using his name. But Guluva isn’t holding grudges.
“I’m looking forward to working with uBhuti Omdala [older brother],” he said.
Recently, President of the Amabhinca nation Ngizwe Mchunu said Sweet Guluva’s Big Brother Mzansi win was a proud moment for the Bhinca Nation.
