- Sweet Guluva stayed true to his culture and won Big Brother Mzansi Season Five.
Ngizwe Mchunu says Sweet Guluva’s Big Brother Mzansi win is a proud moment for the Bhinca Nation.
Speaking at the launch of the Amatshiwelele Festival in Durban, Mchunu called for a moment of silence to honour the reality TV winner, whose real name is Akhonamathemba Mbele.
Mchunu, who calls himself the president of the Bhinca Nation, praised Guluva for proudly representing Bhinca culture on an international stage.
“He never felt ashamed of his Bhinca lifestyle, even though it could have hurt his chances of winning,” said Mchunu.
He said Guluva proved that young people can stay true to who they are and still win.
“We still have a problem in the entertainment industry, especially on radio and TV stations. They don’t celebrate our talent,” said Mchunu.
“Even if we win international awards or song of the year, our music doesn’t get played. They are still ashamed of amaBhinca.”
He blamed what he called the lasting impact of colonialism, saying it made people see black South African culture as “dirty and evil”.
“This time, Sweet Guluva raised our Bhinca flag. He was the most popular contestant and we are very proud. He made Bhinca Nation great again,” said Mchunu.
Guluva is expected to return to his hometown of Nquthu on 5 April.
The local municipality is planning a big homecoming celebration at the local stadium.
