  • Ndebele helped stop ANC-IFP violence but later moved the capital from IFP stronghold Ulundi to Pietermaritzburg.

The IFP-led KZN provincial government has hired Dr Sbu Ndebele, the province‘s first ANC premier, to run the province’s tourism entity board.

Economic development, tourism and environmental affairs MEC Reverend Musa Zondi appointed Ndebele as chairperson of the recently constituted KZN Tourism and Film Authority board last month.

Ndebele helped end the ANC-IFP violence that killed over 20,000 people before becoming premier in 2004.

He then moved the capital from Ulundi to Pietermaritzburg, which saw the IFP lose control of the province.

His time as premier wasn’t smooth – he had to return a Mercedes-Benz S500 gift from emergent road construction contractors that had won government contracts. As transport minister later, he brought in the unpopular e-tolls in Gauteng.

Ndebele also served as ambassador to India and Australia. He now joins the tourism board with former Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife CEO Dr Bandile Mkhize and others.
