Hungary leave it late to starve Scotland of Euro 2024 success

By Razeen Gutta

Scotland were eliminated from the European Championships after Kevin Csovoth’s stoppage time winner gave the Hungarians a fighting chance at making the knockout stages.

After losing their opening two games, Hungary could still make the last 16 of Euro 2024 as Group A’s fixtures concluded on Sunday.

Germany finished as group winners despite going a goal down in the first half against Switzerland.

Dan Ndoye’s opener was cancelled out late on by Niclas Fuellkrug, who once again made an impact off the bench for the hosts.

The draw was enough for both sides to attain direct qualification to the next round, with Switzerland, unbeaten, claiming second spot.

The four best third placed teams will also make the round of 16; and for 100 minutes of football in Stuttgart, it seemed as though the Scots would give themselves that chance.

Concerns were raised in the stadium when Barnabas Varga went down in the Scotland penalty area and had to be stretchered off after falling unconscious.

Csovoth’s stoppage time winner came in the 100th minute, with Hungary paying tribute to Varga as they celebrated the latest ever normal-time goal at the Euros.

Having done what they could have, they will end the group stages on three points, with the remaining games dictating whether or not they will make the knockout stages.

On Monday, Group B will conclude as Spain face Albania while Croatia take on Italy. Both games kick off at 9pm
