- The 35-year-old woman was opening a gate when it suddenly collapsed, trapping her underneath.
- Her co-workers rushed her to the emergency ward, but she died from her injuries shortly after.
An accident at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha left a woman dead in the early hours of Wednesday.
She was a security guard at the hospital and had been on duty when the gate fell on her.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the incident happened at about 4:20am.
“She was opening Gate 3 when it came off the tracks and fell on her,” said Janse van Rensburg.
Co-workers tried to save her by rushing her to the emergency ward, but she died from her injuries.
An inquest has been opened by SAPS Gelvandale.
The Eastern Cape Department of Health says it is helping staff who witnessed the tragic event.
Department spokesperson Siyanda Manana said they were arranging psychological counselling and debriefing sessions for the guards who were on duty at the time.
“We are also arranging a meeting with the service provider to pave the way forward from here,” he said.
She worked for a private company, Nomgwenye Security Solutions.
