Big Brother Mzansi’s first runner-up Uyanda “Honey Badger” Hlangabezo got a hero’s welcome at Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport on Monday evening.

Fans from across the Eastern Cape gathered in Gqeberha to celebrate the 24-year-old teacher from Ngcobo who made it to the final two in Season 5.

Although Akhonamathemba “Sweet Guluva” Mbhele walked away with the R2 million prize, it was Honey Badger’s charm, humour and confidence that won over thousands of viewers.

He became a fan favourite with his traditional amagwijo songs and lively energy. His supporters — known as the Badgers — quickly raised more than R250,000 for him just two days after he left the house.

The fundraising campaign was started by TikTok influencer Mandisi Tshingana.

“I launched the crowdfunding campaign because Uyanda’s journey in BBMzansi Season 5 resonated deeply with South Africans. His resilience, authenticity and commitment to positivity inspired countless fans,” said Tshingana.

He said the aim was to support Uyanda’s next steps after being away for months. “This isn’t just about money — it’s about turning a moment into a movement,” Tshingana said.

Uyanda didn’t walk away empty-handed. He won two LottoStar Arena Games and served as Head of House during the show.

His handler, Lisakhanya Pakatwana, said a homecoming celebration is being planned in Ngcobo, with top Eastern Cape artists and brands already showing support.
