Hero Two: A global superstar who hasn’t forgotten her roots

By staff writer

YohWhatAYear: Scrolla.Africa is counting down the heroes and horrors of 2023. At number two on the nice list is the pop sensation Tyla.

Some South Africans may have known her for some time but to most of us, Tyla only became a household name this year.

In a world where fame can come in a single viral moment, Tyla’s hit song “Water” did just that for her.

The 21-year-old’s song went viral on TikTok where thousands of users participated in a dancing challenge which used her song.

She quickly rose to fame, she went from people dressing up like her and as a water bottle for Halloween, to being nominated for a Grammy weeks later.

To the people back home, the best thing about Tyla is her ability to stick to her roots despite becoming famous and well-known abroad.

Not once has Tyla changed who she is in spite of being on TV and radio shows.

So often South Africans see their stars go overseas and immediately small things, like their accents, start changing.

But for this youngster, she still throws around passionate “Yohs!” and brags about how good pap is back home, so much so that she brings a bag with her when she travels.

And her future is just as bright as she prepares to release her debut album in January which will feature a remix to her hit song “Water”, which features rapper Travis Scott.

There are people who want to debate whether Tyla is black or coloured, but to most of us, Tyla is simply South African and proudly so.
