Heavy rain and hail to hit Gauteng

By Rorisang Modiba

  • The weather service warns of a sixty percent chance of dangerous storms that could damage homes and flood roads this Tuesday.
  • Emergency teams are watching high risk areas closely and urging people to stay indoors and avoid crossing flooded bridges.

Commuters and families in Gauteng need to look out for each other this Tuesday.

The South African Weather Service has warned that bad weather is on the way.

There is a 60% chance of severe thunderstorms hitting the province. This comes with a risk of heavy rain, strong winds and hail.

A yellow Level 2 warning is in place. It covers Gauteng and parts of North West, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

This fresh warning follows storms that caused flash floods and damage just last week.

Nana Radebe-Kgiba from the City of Tshwane says communities must be careful.

Emergency teams are on high alert. They are watching areas that flood easily to help people quickly.

The storms could cause serious problems for people trying to get home. Roads and low-lying areas might flood, causing traffic jams and accidents.

Strong winds and lightning could damage roofs in both formal and informal settlements.

Motorists must drive slowly. Poor visibility and slippery roads will make driving dangerous.

Residents are asked to stay indoors if they can.

Do not stand under trees or touch metal objects like fences during the storm. Never try to cross flooded roads or bridges.
