Wonga Booi was never going to get a job in his hometown of Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape, so he went to Cape Town to look for a job – but Wonga was never coming home alive.

His older brother, Sibabale Booi suggested that he join him in Cape Town in the hope that he would secure employment as he had done.

He moved to the city in March this year but six months later, on Sunday night, Wonga was robbed and killed in Marikana squatter camp outside Cape Town.

Sibabale said he regretted suggesting that Wonga must come to Cape Town.

“He didn’t even get a job in the five months that he was in the City,” he said.

“It never crossed my mind that he would be murdered.”

He said Wonga had recently got a security certificate and he was going to submit his CV to a security company on Monday.

He said he last spoke to his brother around 2pm on Saturday.

“I left him at home when I went to work and I phoned him. I didn’t know I would never hear his voice again.”

He said his neighbour called him to come home and when he got there he found his brother’s naked body dumped in the veld. He had been hit with a sharp object on the back of his head.

He now faces the challenge of burying his brother. He said he recently started working and doesn’t have money to bury him.

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape spokesperson confirmed they are investigating a case of murder after Wonga’s body was discovered on Sunday morning. “The motive for the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made so far.”
