Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer ‘Chincha Guvula’ Motaung believes that a lot was learned from the tragedy that took place at Ellis Park on 11 April 2001 – exactly 20 years ago.
Described as the worst sporting event in South Africa, 43 fans died in a stampede at the stadium while attending a Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
According to reports at the time, the stadium was packed to its 60,000 capacity but a further 30,000 people tried to make their way in.
Motaung said football has made many strides since the tragedy.
“As the football community we have done a lot and we have learned many lessons from that unfortunate event,” Motaung told PSL Media.
“I think the lessons learned at that game actually accelerated us into ensuring that the lives of the people must be prioritised when we have such big events.”
The Amakhosi chairman expressed his satisfaction that up to this day we haven’t had any event that could have triggered something of this nature.
Motaung sent his message of condolences to the bereaved families.
“We wish them strength and we hope the families have gathered strength,” he said.
“On behalf of Kaizer Chiefs Football Club and soccer fraternity at large, this day will remain a very important day in our lives and we thank you for the support.”
