The family of the late Kwaito star Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo said the local KwaZulu-Natal government did not pay for the funeral.
Social media was rife with rumours that the KZN government had paid for the funeral that took place last Saturday after Mampintsha died in a Durban hospital on Christmas eve after suffering a stroke.
After his funeral at the Durban Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex on Friday, rumours surfaced that the local government coughed up R50 million to help the Maphumulo family with the burial cost.
On Wednesday, the KZN local government issued a statement rubbishing those rumours and calling it fake news.
“The falsehood being peddled about R50 million is nothing more than a figment of imagination by those who are morally and spiritually bankrupt,” said the statement.
“We appeal to the public to not abuse the power of social media by spreading false information.”
Speaking on behalf of the family, Zandile Maphumulo, Mampintsha’s sister, told Scrolla.Africa the provincial government did come to their support but it was not R50 million.
“The amount on social media is just fake news. I wrote the letter to the office of the premier and their response was that they will support us,” said Maphumulo.
Maphumulo said the government made it clear that they will support them whatever they couldn’t fund themselves.
The local government then the exact sum they dished out for the funeral.
They confirmed the office of the Premier paid R170,000 while the Department of Sport, Art and Culture supported with R50,000.
