The Dyantyisi family was sleeping peacefully around 2 am when a big bang woke them up.
Siyolise Dyantyisi, one of the homeowners from Delft, Cape Town, thought it was a fire.
“The first thing that came into my mind was the fire. I thought it was an electricity box, but I was surprised that there was no smoke,” said Siyolise.
She rushed to the door to check what was happening, but the door couldn’t open because it was blocked.
Her husband tried to get out to see what had blocked their door from opening, and he saw a Golden Arrow bus.
“The bus damaged our boundary wall and the car that was in our garage. We were told that the driver lost control after some men tried to rob them by throwing stones at their bus,” she said.
Their neighbour’s boundary wall was also damaged, as well as a shack.
“We thank God that we survived the crash; it could’ve been worse than that. Now the company must fix the damage.
“We understand that the driver was trying to run away from criminals and lost control, but we need the mess to be fixed,” she said.
Golden Arrow Bus Service spokesperson, Bronwen Dyker-Beyer, said the bus was transporting its employees when they were targeted by unknown gunmen.
“It is not clear what the motive was, but a shot was fired, causing our driver to momentarily lose control of the bus. Unfortunately, this caused our bus to collide with the boundary walls of houses.”
She said they have made contact with the homeowners to begin the process of repairing the damage, and a case has been opened with SAPS.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said Delft SAPS on the scene were informed by the 49-year-old homeowner that the driver of a bus company based at the Philippi depot was approached by four unknown men while he was driving and lost control of the bus.
