GladAfrica Championship players left high and dry without salaries for two months

Platinum City Rovers were promoted to the GladAfrica Championship from the ABC Motsepe League before the start of this season but the club hasn’t paid players for two months.

South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) says they are aware of the situation.

SAFPU President Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe said: “We have documents on our table, but we are still assessing it. We will make a proper statement in due time.”

According to Laduma, insiders at Rovers said players are disgruntled because they did not get paid in December, and they are still waiting for their January payment.

“We are suffering. They promised to pay us on 24 December. Our team manager has been promising but he is not the one paying us. It’s really tough,” a source told the Siya crew.

“Players are not coming to training. Some borrow money. We thought things would change when we got promoted to the GladAfrica Championship, but it’s gone from bad to worse.”

Despite starting the season on a high, the Johannesburg-based club now find themselves in ninth spot.

There are rumours that the team will be releasing some players to cut costs, the source said.

But if they release players, what are they going to do about the unpaid salaries?

Rovers are back in action on 12 February when they take on Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.
