‘Get your flu vaccine now!’

The national Department of Health is urging the public, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly or those with preexisting health conditions, to get the flu vaccine before winter starts.

The vaccine is available free of charge at public clinics.

A spokesperson for the retail chain of chemists Dischem claims the benefits of getting a flu vaccine include protecting yourself and others, avoiding serious illness, building a stronger immune system and acquiring peace of mind.

There have been reports of respiratory syncytial virus, a mild cold-like sickness, spreading across the country.

Foster Mohale, a health department spokesperson, said parents and their children should see a doctor if they get flu-like symptoms.

However, the department and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases have said there is no reason to worry.

Mohale said parents and caregivers are urged to take their children to the nearest health facility or health care providers for medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties, are not drinking enough fluids, or have deteriorating symptoms.

“People who have flu are usually contagious for three to eight days. Preventative measures such as wearing masks and social distancing are recommended, especially for those who are ill or have symptoms of the syncytial virus,” Mohale said, SABC reported.
