Gauteng ANC youth league conference on hold

  • The Gauteng ANC Youth League postpones its first proper leadership election in 10 years as only 34% of branches are currently active.
  • The conference delay is to give branches time to audit members and prepare for provincial meetings happening across the country.

The ANC Youth League in Gauteng must wait longer to elect new leaders after 10 years of temporary leadership.

The provincial conference planned for this weekend has been moved to a date later in November that is yet to be set.

The province has had no proper structures since 2014, running instead on temporary provincial executive committees (PECs) and regional executive committees (RECs).

The current provincial task team was set up in July by the National Working Committee. It must rebuild branches and hold regional and provincial meetings before 9 February.

Youth League spokesperson Kgotso Pooe said the delay will help branches check their membership lists.

“This is to give branches enough time to conduct their internal auditing of members and to give the province time to audit the information we will receive,” he said.

Youth League president Collen Malatji said only 34% of Gauteng branches are active.

“We need strong voices to be elected to leadership positions to advocate for the rights of young people,” he said.

“I will be checking across the country that structures are ready for provincial conferences before the end of the year. In all corners of the country, we no longer want task teams but BECs [branch executive committees], RECs, and PECs,” he said.
