Four young people shot dead in Cape Town

Four people were shot dead in the Lloyd informal settlement in Cape Town on Sunday night. A fifth victim was rushed to hospital.

A resident speaking anonymously said the victims were sitting in a shack when they were shot.

“A man arrived and started shooting, killing all four of them in the shack,” said the resident.

“The suspect allegedly asked one of the victims to give him a cigarette. When he refused, the suspect allegedly took out a gun and shot him. We believe he wanted to kill him but confused him by asking for a cigarette.”

The victims are between 18 and 20 years old.

“They are all kids because they haven’t reached 25 years,” said the resident. “We don’t know what the real reason is behind the shooting. We fear for our lives. We don’t know what will happen next.”

Another resident felt that the government was too quiet about the killings in Cape Town’s informal settlements.

“When is our government going to act on this? Two weeks ago, four men and a woman were killed in Khayelitsha,” said the resident.

“Now, in our area, five people were shot, leaving three men and a woman dead. Our government must take action and bring soldiers.”

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said the police have launched an investigation into the four murders.

The motive for the attack on the victims is yet to be determined, Traut said, and the suspects are still at large.
