Formula 1 could soon have another challenger

Michael Andretti, former racing star and son of F1 champion Mario Andretti, has moved closer to getting his team onto the Formula 1 grid.

Andretti Global earlier this year announced its partnership with General Motors’ Cadillac, imagining an American-owned team featuring at least one American driver.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One, previously displayed caution about grid expansion, emphasising the business impacts of any approval.

An official statement from Formula One mentioned the FIA’s outcomes, saying, “We will now conduct our assessment of the merits of the remaining application.”

Starting in February, the FIA’s formal application process targets the inclusion of new teams in 2025, 2026, or 2027.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirmed the EU rules on motorsport participation and development in the decision-making process, praising Andretti’s team for their complete application.

While Alpine initially offered to provide engines should Andretti secure a spot, managerial shifts within the Renault-owned team might have an impact on this promise.

The FIA, in their approval for Andretti, did not mention the set debut year for the team.
