First case in SA’s poorest region

Alfred Nzo District in the Eastern Cape, regarded by Stats SA as the poorest region in SA, has recorded its first case of Covid-19.

The region has the lowest percentage of households with piped water and has recorded the lowest household income.

The region covers rural towns including Bizana, Ntabankulu, Flagstaff, Mount Frere, Mount Ayliff and Matatiele.

Alfred Nzo municipal spokesperson Lixolile Petela said “we are unable to divulge full details of the case but we can assure the people of Alfred Nzo that the person has been isolated and is receiving relevant attention”.
