Finger Lickin’ votes

By Celani Sikhakhane

Former DA Youth leader Mbali Ntuli has been offering KFC vouchers to encourage youths to register to vote online.

She promises that any youth who takes advantage of the IEC’s online registration portal will receive a R40 chicken voucher via her Ground Work Collective. The offer is good up to 16 December, the Day of Reconciliation.

During a recent interview with Newzroom Afrika, Ntuli said that about 14 million youth between the ages of 18 and 35 have not registered to vote — thus the lure of fried chicken.

When young people put their details online to register as a voter, in return they automatically get the voucher. “You scan your QR code. Complete your IEC registration details and become a registered voter between 16 November to 16 December 2023. Then you will win a R40 KFC voucher,” reads the voter registration literature on the Ground Work Collective website.

Ntuli said that the problem that is facing the country is that those who voted in 1994 believe that they no longer have a role to play in the democracy they brought through their vote.

“That is why the voter registration education that we are pushing is very important — to give the youth an opportunity to participate in their democracy and hold government accountable,” she said.

Ntuli has been staging concerts to educate young people about the importance of voter registration, which was launched seven months ago.

Ground Work held a successful concert in Durban South Beach where young people were able to enjoy themselves while being registered for the 2024 elections. Another concert was held in Braamfontein in Johannesburg.
