Fifa lifts transfer ban on Swallows

By Linda Ximba

Struggling DStv Premiership team Swallows FC are looking forward to signing new players now that FIFA has lifted a transfer ban on them.

The world football governing board banned Swallows FC in September 2022 after the club failed to pay former Serbian players the duo of Obren Cuckovic and Vladimir Mandic, who were in the club’s books in the 2014/15 season.

According to the ruling, Swallows were to be banned for three transfer windows. The Soweto club tried to appeal the decision in the past few months to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland but were unsuccessful.

But on Friday Swallows FC chairman disclosed good news that they have absolved of any wrongdoing by Fifa.

“The outstanding matter with Fifa has been resolved. The ban is lifted, players that were affected by the ban will now be registered and let me hasten to make it clear that there’s no money we paid to Fifa,” said Mogasha.

“The matter was settled without fines or anything. This now means we can sign players to bolster our team. It’s good news in the Birds Nest.”

Former Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is likely to be signed having spent months training with the team.

Scrolla.Africa has been told that coach Ernst Middendorp has recommended he needs the Nigerian international in his team as they are fighting relegation. Middendorp is a great admirer of Akpeyi having worked with him at Chippa and Chiefs previously.

Swallows are in a precarious position on the log table, sitting in 15th with 18 points from 19 matches. They are just two points above bottom-placed Marumo Gallants. In 17 matches, they have accumulated 17 points after registering four victories, five draws and suffered eight defeats.
