Fan dies at Spanish football game

The La Liga match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao, held at Estadio Nuevo los Cármenes, was suspended on Sunday following the tragic death of a fan.

The game was paused in the first half after a 64-year-old Granada supporter suffered cardiac arrest and passed away.

The seriousness of the situation became apparent during the first half, leading fans to call for the ball to be put out of play.

Subsequently, the players left the field. Despite an hour-long effort by paramedics to revive the fan, La Liga confirmed the individual’s death and announced the game’s suspension, a decision supported by both clubs.

La Liga announced that the match would be resumed on Monday, starting from the 17th minute.

At the time of suspension, Athletic Bilbao was leading 1-0, thanks to an early goal by Iñaki Williams.

La Liga issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, as well as to the entire Granada fan community.

The decision to continue the match on December 11 at 9 pm was made by the RFEF competition judge at La Liga’s request.

Athletic Bilbao shared their sympathies on social media, extending their deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones.

The clubs and La Liga jointly agreed to the postponement out of respect for the tragic incident.
