Top athletes are gathering in Gqeberha for the national championships this weekend.

The National Athletic Championships in Gqeberha are going to showcase fireworks for the highly anticipated event.

Reigning South African half-marathon champion, Melikhaya Frans, is confident in his preparation as he aims to defend his title in the 21km distance.

Frans, one of the favourites, is alongside renowned athletes such as multiple national champion Stephen Mokoka, SA 10km record holder Precious Mashele, and former 5,000m champion Thabang Mosiako.

The race at Gqeberha’s Summerstrand Beach offers a flat route, raising expectations for a fast run.

“My preparation has been going well,” said Frans, who won the title with a time of 1:01:19  and also holds the national 30km record.

“I have diligently followed the race plan and have seen significant improvements in my training.”

Frans is confident that he can defend his title. Being on home ground, he is determined not to disappoint his local supporters and is willing to give his all to come out on top.

Mashele returns to the windy city after his remarkable 10km run of 27:35 in April. He expects a fast-paced race with athletes displaying notable improvements throughout the year.

Mashele plans to stick with the leading group from the start and launch his attack towards the end, emphasising the importance of not letting his competitors gain an advantage.

In the women’s race, the battle for top honours is expected to be intense. South African 10,000m champion Glenrose Xaba will face tough competition from Kesa Molotsane, Cacisile Sosibo, and Annie Bothma.
