Eskom is investigating Unit 4 generator explosion at the Medupi Power Station in Lephalale that occurred on Sunday night at around 10.50pm. The explosion caused Unit 5 to trip.

Eskom said: “Unit 4 was on a short-term outage since Sunday 6 August when the incident occurred, and all work on the unit was suspended with immediate effect. This included the suspension of all permits to work on the plant until further notice.”

Eskom, South Africa’s sole electricity provider said once the area was secured and cleared by the fire chief and engineers assessment would get underway to investigate the cause of the incident and the amount of damage caused.

Eskom continued to say measures to get Medupi Unit 5 back to full capacity after the explosion had begun.

They concluded by saying: “Investigations are underway into the cause of the incident and Eskom will update the public on developments, as well as to what extent the incident will impact the national electricity grid.”
