- Eskom paid its board R22.4-million in 2025, up from R12.2-million, after introducing new fees for meeting attendance.
- Board chair Mteto Nyati earned R2.72-million, twice his 2024 pay, while most directors also saw their earnings more than double.
Eskom has almost doubled what it pays its board members, spending R22.4-million on non-executive directors in 2025 which is up from R12.2-million the year before.
The rise came after the power utility changed how its board is paid. Until 2024, non-executive directors received fixed committee fees, no matter how many meetings they attended.
From 1 April 2024, a new structure was introduced. A fixed retainer plus extra pay for every meeting attended. The new system, approved by the shareholder, also gives more money to the board chair and to committee chairs.
Eskom’s integrated report shows that board chair Mteto Nyati received the highest pay in 2025 – R2.72-million. That’s double the R1.36-million he earned in 2024. He only became chair five months before the end of that financial year.
In 2024, Nyati and then-chair Mpho Makwana together earned R2.29-million – still R433,000 less than Nyati earned alone in 2025.
Almost all board members saw their pay more than double under the new system. The only exception was Tryphosa Ramano, whose earnings rose from R1.02-million to R2-million.
Eskom said the hybrid payment model rewards time and effort while making pay fairer for members who attend more meetings.
The higher pay came in the same year Eskom posted its first profit in eight years – R16.05-billion.
