Trent Alexander Arnold netted the winning penalty to eliminate the Swiss after a late Bukayo Saka equaliser rescued the Three Lions from quarter final heartbreak.
Breel Embolo put Switzerland in front with 15 minutes of normal time to play after a drab affair in Düsseldorf.
Five minutes later, Saka struck from outside the box to level matters and force extra time in back-to-back games for England.
The Three Lions’ poor penalty shootout record in major tournaments did not deter them this time, with Gareth Southgate’s men beating the Swiss for the second time in shootouts, after doing the same in the 2019 Nations League.
The 5-3 win came without captain Harry Kane, who was withdrawn in extra time.
Alexander Arnold’s introduction with minutes to play proved crucial as the Scouser netted the decisive spotkick to help England reach the semi-finals in consecutive Euros for the first time ever.
Switzerland have now faced elimination in all five of their major tournament quarter-final appearances, with penalties resulting in their downfall for the second Euro on the bounce.
England will take to the field in Dortmund on Wednesday to face either the Netherlands or Turkey in the last four after Spain take on France in Munich on Tuesday.
