- The Foster Care Grant increases from R1,290 to R1,300 from 1 October.
- It is the second increase this year, after the grant rose by R40 in April.
Foster parents will get a little more help from the government starting today, but the increase amounts to just R10 a month.
The Foster Care Grant rises from R1,290 to R1,300 from 1 October.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced this two-stage increase in the 2026 Budget. The grant first went up by R40 to R1,290 in April, before today’s additional R10 increase. In total, foster parents will now receive R50 more a month than they did before April, or R600 more over a full year at the new rate.
Other major grants received their full increases back in April. The Older Persons, Disability and Care Dependency Grants rose to R2,400, while the Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid rose to R580.
Foster parents will begin receiving October’s payment next week, as part of SASSA’s normal children’s grant cycle. Older persons are scheduled to be paid on Friday, 2 October, disability grants on Monday, 5 October, and children’s grants on Tuesday, 6 October.
This increase comes as households continue to face rising costs for food, transport, electricity and other basics, costs that an extra R10 a month does little to offset.
