Church – Political party leaders gathered at the Grace Bible Church in Soweto for the SA Council of Churches’ prayer day. Council president Archbishop Thabo Makgoba called on politicians to fight corruption in the public service. “The church has an important role to play by empowering people to participate in processes leading to democracy and enabling them to protect their and other people’s intrinsic rights in society as they live their lives,” the council said in a statement.
DA – In another moment of tone-deafness, the DA has rubbed South Africans the wrong way with an election advert in which the South African flag is burned. Clayson Monyela, the head of public diplomacy at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, said: “Burning a national symbol of unity – the public outrage is fully justified.”
IFP – “Even a limping old lady must come out to help us get rid of this failed government.” These were the words of IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa who is consolidating the IFP support in KwaZulu-Natal. The Three Elephants are hoping to regain control of the province that they ran for two terms from 1994 to 2004. The resurgent IFP took over control of municipalities that were previously run by the ANC and has been beating the ruling party in dozens of by-elections in the province.
Good – Leader Patricia de Lille took her campaign to Lavender Hill and Retreat where she spoke to community members who lost their livelihoods to fire. De Lille is campaigning for the introduction of a basic income grant and has been trying to get a R999 grant on a small scale to study its feasibility compared to the R350 grant distributed by the state. The Good Party is fighting to reduce the DA vote in coloured and black communities in the Western Cape and has refused to join the DA-led Multi-party Charter for SA.
ANC – Former Gauteng Premier Tokyo Sexwale will be joining the ANC campaign trail on Tuesday with door-to-door visits and public meetings with residents in Katlehong. He joins former deputy president DD Mabuza who has joined the campaign in Gauteng before proceeding to KZN. Other heavyweights campaigning in Gauteng include former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe.
