Election Bites: IEC to investigate MK ‘forgeries’

Scrolla.Africa delivers all you need to know ahead of the 29 May elections.

Umkhonto Wesizwe – The IEC has shown a willingness to investigate claims that Umkhonto Wesizwe forged some of the 15,000 signatures required to register a political party. “The Commission has noted media enquiries and reports alleging that the MK Party submitted fraudulent signatures in fulfilment of the candidate nomination requirements,” said the IEC. The IEC has called on crime investigation authorities to complete investigations to establish the allegations, which they said is essential for free and fair elections.

ANC – Jacob Zuma may be experiencing serious problems in his new party, but he has not stopped haunting Fikile Mbalula. Mbalula told ANC supporters at the weekend that Jacob Zuma is telling people to “follow the MK Party, Umshini wami”. “It’s time we let him go. He must leave the ANC,” said Mbalula.

EFF – Julius Malema, his deputy Floyd Shivambu and party secretary Marshall Dlamini have all in the last week called Jacob Zuma a criminal. This could be a blow to EFF and Umkhonto Wesizwe supporters who are hoping to see the two parties joining forces after the elections. After a dismal performance in recent by-elections, the EFF has put out a powerful election advert calling for free education and land expropriation, while criticising the government for load shedding, crime and corruption in the public service.

Rise Mzansi – The party has appointed former Young Communist League spokesperson Gugu Ndima as its national spokesperson.

IFP – President Velenkosini Hlabisa consolidated support in the IFP strongholds of eFolweni and uMhlabuyalingana in Zululand where the party is consistently drawing big crowds. The party is hoping to unseat the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and form a coalition that could govern the province into the future.
