Election bites: EFF campaigns on ANC ground

Scrolla.Africa delivers all you need to know ahead of the 29 May elections.

EFF – Leader Julius Malema took his election campaign to the ANC stronghold of the Gert Sibande region in Mpumalanga. Hundreds showed up at the party’s mini rally in Chief Albert Luthuli region, also in Mpumalanga, where Malema campaigned with party treasurer Omphile Maotwe.

IEC – Three political parties have taken the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to the Constitutional Court to force it to allow them to register for the elections. With the elections less than three weeks away, the parties also hope to get them postponed to a date later than 29 May. Ace Magashule’s African Congress for Transformation, the Labour Party of South Africa, and the Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats missed the IEC list submission deadline on 8 March. They argue that the IEC electronic system had a technical glitch that failed to capture their submissions.

ANC – Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo joined former Gauteng premier Tokyo Sexwale on the ANC campaign trail in Soweto.

PA – Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has called for the names of everyone who was working on the construction of the collapsed five-storey building in George. The PA suspects illegal foreigners were employed by the construction company. “It is crucially important to see the names of all trapped and rescued workers. We are being told that the majority of workers are unregistered and illegal foreigners. The work on the George building was done by unqualified illegal persons.”

Rise Mzansi – Songezo Zibi, the founder of Rise Mzansi, says they are shifting to a higher gear in their election campaign. Hundreds of party volunteers spread across the country on Wednesday, putting up additional street pole election posters. “It’s National Postering Day. We are continuing the work of putting up our posters ahead of the elections. They will be up across all nine provinces.”

IFP – President Velenkosini Hlabisa is taking his party’s campaign to Mahikeng in North West where he will address the community at the Barolong Community Hall in Montshioa-Stadt. The party is keen to prove that it is not just a KwaZulu-Natal party, even though its entire top leadership is from that province. Outside of KZN, the IFP has a significant following in Limpopo, North West, Free State and Gauteng.
