El Clasico antics leave Auba’s career hanging by a thread

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have his Chelsea contract terminated at the end of this season following his visit to Barcelona on the weekend.

The 33-year-old, who has made just one start for the Blues in 2023, was in attendance as the Catalans beat their rivals Real Madrid 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

Having scored 13 goals in 23 matches for Barcelona last year, the Gabon international made the mistake of moving to West London in the summer.

Thomas Tuchel wanted the former Arsenal man, but he was sacked shortly after the deal was done. And given Aubameyang’s absence from the team of late, it appears that new boss Graham Potter has other preferences at the top of the pitch.

Photographs emerged of Aubameyang celebrating inside the Barcelona dressing room after the El Clasico win. Spanish outlet SPORT reported that while there he expressed his desire to return to Catalonia.

His Chelsea contract only expires in 2024. However, according to GOAL, Chelsea would be open to terminating it a year early to help facilitate a move back to Spain.
