EFF stalls in axing of eThekwini mayor

The EFF in eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality has not decided whether they will support a vote of no confidence against ANC Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda after councillors were physically beaten and thrown out of a council meeting on 1 November.

They had demanded answers over R1.9 billion earmarked for infrastructure which had not been spent and was to be returned to the national Treasury.

Last week IFP councillor Mdu Nkosi filed a motion of no confidence to remove Kaunda.

EFF eThekwini chairperson Themba Mvubu, who is also the head of the infrastructure unit in the metro, said that no one from the opposition parties has approached them to discuss the motion against Kaunda.

“We only heard about this motion during the SABC television interview where I was on a panel with ActionSA and IFP councillors. We don’t know anything about it.

“We will only decide once they approach us. At the moment we have not made any decisions. I think let’s hold it there until they come to us,” said Mvubu.

The EFF governs the City of eThekwini in a coalition with the ANC and NFP. The EFF is the kingmaker with 24 seats in the council.

The party’s relationship with the ANC worsened after the ANC accused the EFF of working with the DA behind their back to unseat them in eThekwini.

Meanwhile the IFP has highlighted several critical concerns that they claim have arisen during Kaunda’s tenure.

These concerns include findings by the Auditor-General for multiple financial years, indicating financial irregularities within the municipality.

The misuse of municipal finance during the Covid-19 pandemic potentially affects the resources allocated for public health and safety during a crisis.
