Government meets with business and community leaders to improve service delivery in the Eastern Cape.
- Groups will sign agreement to work together on fixing problems like vandalism and creating jobs.
Eastern Cape government officials are meeting with business people and community leaders in Gqeberha to find ways to improve services for residents.
The two-day workshop at the Coega Vulindlela Conference Centre has brought together local chiefs, university experts and civil society groups. They want to fix problems with basic services, money management and creating jobs.
The group is looking at ways to stop vandalism of public property and protect the environment while making it easier for businesses to operate in the province.
At the workshop, experts talked about making government work better by cutting unnecessary rules and training municipal workers properly. They also discussed how to get money from overseas investors to improve services.
Government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said working with businesses and community groups is important to solve the province’s problems.
“We’re also looking at this opportunity to onboard the private sector and civil society so that we can advise each other, we can work together in terms of developing the province,” she said.
The different groups will sign an agreement to work together.
Rantjie used Sanral’s Wild Coast road project as an example of good work. She said they will talk about how similar projects can create jobs.
“So those are some of the conversations that we are hoping to have in the next two days to bring civil society on board and we have a clear memorandum in terms of how we are going to be working together to achieve these goals that have been set for the next five years,” she said.
