Table Tennis South Africa President Joe Carriem is confident that the country will host a successful World Table Tennis Championship later this year.
The event is scheduled to take place between 22 and 28 May in Durban at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
South Africa will become only the second African country to stage the championship after Egypt hosted it in 1939.
Speaking at the 84 days’ countdown held at Moses Mabhida Stadium, in line with the 84 years since an African country last staged the event, Carriem said the organisation is set to welcome the world.
“I think we are now certain that we are ready to stage a successful event. The preparations showed we are in the right space,” he told Scrolla.Africa.
“We want to show the world we are good at giving the best hospitality. This is a big event and we must impress.”
Table tennis is not a professional sport in South Africa but Carriem is optimistic that having such an event will bring change.
“We must face reality, though. We are not in the league of countries like India and China where table tennis dominates. It will take time to get to that level,” he said.
“But I’m hoping this championship will make the world take notice of African countries. This is about the continent.”
The draw for the championship will be conducted in Durban on 18 May. Over 200 players are expected to visit Durban during the six days of the event. The tickets are expected to go on sale next week.
