KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has confirmed that Durban’s long-distance taxis will resume operations on Sunday. This follows a week-long strike by the Durban Long-Distance Taxi Association, which left commuters stranded.
Speaking after talks with the association on Saturday, Duma said they had reached an agreement to resolve the issues.
“Let’s first announce officially that we have both agreed and reached a consensus that [on Sunday] they are back at work and they will start loading,” he said.
“I am sure it’s good news for our people, and we want to apologise profusely for the inconvenience.”
A task team has been set up to address future challenges. The team includes five representatives from the provincial transport department and five from the taxi association.
“We agreed that the associations will meet again to consolidate a strategy on how things will run going forward,” Duma explained.
“These everlasting solutions are going to assist.”
