After remixing the iconic Brenda Fassie song “Weekend Special” in February, DJ Shimza has come back with a remix of another old school banger.
This time it’s Bongo Muffin’s “Thathi Sgubhu”.
First released in 1998 by the four-member Mzansi music group, “Thathi Sgubhu” became an instant hit from their second studio album titled The Concerto. The album went on to win the South African Music Award for Best African Pop Album in 1999.
So, it was not a surprise that Shimza chose to go with the hit song as he features for the second time on Ballantine’s There’s No Wrong Way to Remix 2.0 music compilation.
Shimza, who is from Tembisa in Johannesburg, joins “Selema” hitmaker Musa Keys and amapiano giant DJ Stokie, who are also part of the EP.
“I got to remix songs I grew up listening to, big songs!
“The pressure of delivering a remix that will take people back to some of their greatest nostalgic moments is something else, especially if it is done well, which I think I’ve delivered with these remixes,” said Shimza, who is also the face of Ballantine’s South Africa.
The compilation project is the second instalment sponsored by Ballantine’s Scotch whisky. The first instalment only featured DJ Stokie, who used the opportunity to remix songs like DJ Zinhles’s “Indlovu” and Micasa’s hit track “Mamela” as well as two iconic kwaito hits by M’du and the Trompies.
