DA completes a clean sweep in Gauteng metros

The DA has taken the capital city of South Africa once again.

The DA’s Randal Williams was elected mayor of Tshwane and Katlego Mathebe as the speaker of the council both unopposed.

The ANC decided not to field their candidates as they felt they would be humiliated.

ANC Gauteng provincial secretary Jacob Khawe told SABC news just after the sitting that they deliberately boycotted the voting because they didn’t want to legitimise the process that was not in their favour.

“The people of Tshwane voted for us to be part of the council not to govern as we didn’t get the majority of the votes. So we chose not to put our candidates forward for any positions because we didn’t want to govern at any cost without a full mandate from our voters,” said Khawe.

He described the “coalition” of the opposition to support the DA as a gangster group.

“These are gangsters who didn’t want to be referred to as coalition partners. So we decided not to be part of gangsterism,” said Khawe.

The takeover of Tshwane by the DA comes after the party took over the ANC stronghold of Ekurhuleni Metro with Tania Campbell and the City of Johannesburg with Dr Mpho Phalatse.

The DA said they are confident that they will run the City of Tshwane without any problems.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said they chose to support the DA candidate because they wanted a change and to save Tshwane residents from the ANC.
