The local government elections won’t take place on 27 October as planned because of Covid.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Friday accepted the advice of former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke who looked into whether the elections could go ahead.
“The commission accepts the rationale and the central thesis of the report that greater immunity through mass vaccination is a desirable precondition for a safe, free and fair election to be realised,” IEC chair Glen Mashinini said.
Moseneke’s report said there wasn’t enough time for the IEC or political parties to prepare for elections and campaign fairly and freely during a Covid-19 lockdown.
He has recommended the elections be held no later than the end of February 2022.
