- Three drunk drivers were caught trying to bribe traffic officers to dodge arrest in Limpopo.
- Transport minister says fatal crashes are down across most provinces, except Mpumalanga.
Three drunk drivers have been arrested after they tried to bribe traffic officers on Limpopo roads during the Easter holidays.
The drivers offered cash in an attempt to avoid being charged with drinking and driving.
Since the start of the Easter weekend, 111 drivers have been arrested across the country for driving under the influence.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said their officers won’t be swayed.
“Our officers are not for sale and road safety is not negotiable,” he said.
He added that more drunk-driving operations have been launched over the long weekend.

“Traffic officers are undertaking heightened drunk-driving operations over this weekend, as history shows that this kind of conduct increases on weekends,” he said.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said traffic volumes were higher than usual, but no fatal crashes were recorded on the N1.
“Road fatalities and crashes have decreased significantly across all provinces except for Mpumalanga, where we recorded fatal crashes from Thursday and through the holidays,” she said.
Creecy said numbers in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape remained about the same as last year.
“In the other six provinces, there is a significant decline in crash fatalities,” she said.
