A 42-year-old man has been arrested for drug dealing after police found khat worth R89,000 in a truck headed for Cape Town.
On Tuesday, 15 October, members of the Central Karoo K9 Unit, working with Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in George, and the Central Karoo Flying Squad, acted on a tip-off and set up a vehicle checkpoint on the N1 highway in Central Karoo.
They stopped the truck, searched it, and found five boxes with 890 bundles of khat hidden in the driver’s cabin.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said the suspect appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, and the case was postponed to Monday for a bail application.
Fresh khat leaves contain cathinone – a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. The drug is normally chewed but can also be smoked or brewed as tea.
