  • Two Rietgat police officers and two others were arrested after allegedly robbing and kidnapping someone in Klipgat.
  • The suspects were caught at Soshanguve Crossing Mall while trying to sell a stolen cellphone.

Two police officers from the Rietgat Police Station have been arrested for armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of stolen goods.

They were arrested along with two other suspects at Soshanguve Crossing Mall on Monday.

Police had received information from officers in Brits that four men involved in an armed robbery in Klipgat were spotted at the mall selling a cellphone stolen during the crime.

When police arrived, the complainant pointed out the suspects and identified the vehicle they were using.

Police in full uniform and marked cars followed the suspects as they left the mall.

They tried to pull the car over, but the driver jumped out and tried to run away.

He was caught after police fired a warning shot into the ground.

The man claimed to be a constable from Rietgat Police Station and said he was booked off sick that day.

He left his service pistol with 10 rounds inside the car when he fled.

The three others in the car were also arrested, including another Rietgat constable who was found with his own service pistol loaded with 16 rounds.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arrests and said all four suspects will appear in the Soshanguve Magistrates Court soon.
