Cold front set to bring freezing winds and storms

By Rorisang Modiba

  • The Western Cape and Northern Cape face wind speeds up to 95 km/h that may damage homes and trees and cause travel delays.
  • Boats, beaches and roads could be dangerous as waves reach six metres high and driving conditions worsen across much of the country.

Parts of South Africa are bracing for a cold front that will bring strong winds, chilly weather and rough seas from Wednesday, 28 May.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 warning for the Western Cape and Northern Cape. Wind speeds of up to 95 kilometres per hour are expected in some places.

These powerful winds could blow over trees, damage houses and disrupt power and phone services. Travellers should expect delays on major roads such as the N1 and N2.

At sea, small boats and watercraft are at high risk. Rough waves and strong winds will make conditions very dangerous.

A Level 1 warning is also in place for parts of the Eastern Cape, including Graaff-Reinet and Cradock. Winds could reach up to 80 kilometres per hour in these areas.

These winds might knock down power lines and make driving difficult for tall vehicles. The strong wind could also increase the risk of runaway fires.

Cape Town will remain cold from Wednesday through the weekend, with daytime highs of just 16ยฐC. Nights will be even colder at around 14ยฐC.

Most areas will stay dry on Wednesday, with only a small chance of light rain along the south-western coast and near Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

The weather service has also warned about dangerous waves starting on Thursday, 29 May, and lasting until Sunday, 1 June. Waves of up to six metres are expected from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay.

The waves could damage buildings near the coast and make beaches and harbours unsafe.

Friday, 30 May, will remain cool countrywide. While inland areas should see sun or a few clouds, the coast will still have strong winds and some rain.
