Manchester City bounced back from their midweek UEFA Champions League exit at Real Madrid with a dominant 5-0 home win over Newcastle United, sending them straight back to the top of the Premier League table.
Yesterday witnessed some shock results with City’s Manchester rivals United losing 4-0 to Brighton while their title rivals Liverpool dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Spurs.
Pep Guardiola’s side were in no mood for surprises as the Premier League weekend concluded, though. They stamped their authority on the game early on with Raheem Sterling putting them in front inside the first 20 minutes.
Newcastle had some good spells in the first half with Chris Wood having a goal disallowed for offside, but Aymeric Laporte made it two before the break to give City a three-point lead at the top of the table and put them ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
The hosts were on top of things in the second period with Rodri scoring his third goal in three league appearances on the hour mark before Foden and Sterling got two more in stoppage time to put the icing on the cake.
With three games left in the title race, City undoubtedly have the upper hand with Liverpool requiring them to either lose one or draw two — provided Jürgen Klopp’s side win their remaining matches.
Both sides have away games in midweek with the Reds travelling to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Tuesday before City make the trip to Molineux to take on Wolves on Wednesday.
