Chippa United’s constant change of coaches is now beyond madness, writes Michael Madyira.
On Tuesday, club chairman Siviwe Mpengesi announced the return of Morgan Mammila as head coach, in what he described as “significant changes” to their technical team.
This is the man he had fired four months ago for dragging the team into the relegation matrix.
But the ex-cop and administrator-turned-coach has bounced back for another gig at a club notorious for frequently changing their trainers.
At least 15 coaches have taken charge of the Chilli Boys in the last six years and it is difficult for one to finish a season.
Despite all those unending changes, trophies continue to elude the Gqeberha-based side.
With Mammila back, and as it stands, it looks like this chaos is far from over.
One would ask what has changed in Mammila and makes him the perfect candidate to deliver what Mpengesi has been struggling to get from celebrated coaches like Eric Tinkler, Gavin Hunt and Manqoba Mngqithi, who have previously held this job?
This comedy of coach errors is an insult to South African football.
Chippa players can never develop when every season they are coached by, sometimes, four different men, each coming with his own philosophy.
The club can never have a defined playing style or a brand of football that is sustainable.
Only in April 2022 Mammila enrolled for his Safa introductory coaching certificate as he transitioned from being a football administrator to a coach.
He has now been entrusted with turning the Chilli Boys into a fierce competitor, help them win trophies and become the first coach to complete a full season at the club.
It is difficult to understand why Lehlohonolo Seema was not hired, yet he came in to clean Mammila’s mess by helping Chippa escape relegation on the final day of the jut-ended season.
This appears like another monumental blunder by Mpengesi and I will be happy if Mammila proves me wrong and makes me eat my words.
